This now works with OS X versions 10.4 and 10.5.

version 2.0.0 (Jan 3, 2008)
runs separate scripts for 10.4 and 10.5.

Have you ever found yourself wishing that X11 on OS X behaved a bit more like X11 does on canonical unix systems?

Do you miss window focus follows mouse?

Does the X11.app icon in the Dock really annoy you?

How about that disfunctional xterm that annoyingly pops up every time you start X11?

Have your logouts been sabotaged by that stupid pop-up warning that asked if you really truly mean that you want to log out?

Are you scratching your head trying to figure out how to set the X11 $DISPLAY variable for Terminal.app or iTerm?

How do you get $DISPLAY to work for all your users when several are logged in simultaneously via Fast User Switching?

Xterminator for X11 solves these problems, and a few others (perhaps even ones that haven't raised your blood pressure, yet). It is a very simple and free application that guides you through the process. All the default settings are to leave the status quo in place, but you can very easily change any and all of these settings, and experiment with them, safe in the knowledge that you can return to the initial state just by restarting Xterminator and choosing the appropriate settings and clicking OK. Xterminator is a zsh shell script that is invoked and run via a GUI. The GUI was created using another free application called Pashua.

Be sure to save all your X11 work in any open X11 applications before you begin. If anything goes terribly wrong, the application makes backup copies of the various configuration files it interacts with. All interactions are logged to the Console, so simply take a look at the output if any problems should arise. Please also report them to me as bugs.)

Please note that $DISPLAY should never need to be set on 10.5 and that X11.app should not be started on login on 10.5 (a Launchd process takes care of these things for you). Hence the menu for 10.5 will be more abbreviated than that shown here.
