Installing Fink on 10.6
Recommended: 64-bit Fink
There is not yet a binary installer for 64-bit fink on 10.6. Don't panic. Manual installation is quite straightforward, and I have a detailed, step-by-step procedure you can follow here: 64-bit Fink for 10.6.
If your hardware is 64-bit capable (most is, but see the next section below for how to check), I strongly recommend installing 64-bit fink.
Is your hardware 64-bit compatible?
Some of the earlier intel machines (first-generation white plastic iMac and macbook) are not 64-bit capable. To find out if your machine is, issue the command
sysctl hw |grep 64bit
If it returns
hw.cpu64bit_capable: 1
then you really ought to install 64-bit fink, but if it returns
hw.cpu64bit_capable: 0
then I am afraid you are stuck with 32-bit fink.
Install 32-bit Fink if you have to
Fresh Install
Follow the above instructions for boot-strapping fink, but do not select the 64-bit mode.
